WELSH KENNEL CLUB ATTENDS FOCUS GROUP MEETING ON DOG BREEDING REGULATIONS IN WALES PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 21 September 2011 10:17

The Welsh Kennel Club has welcomed the chance to have its say to Assembly officials on draft proposals for revised dog breeding legislation in Wales.

At a meeting of Welsh stakeholders, held on Wednesday 14th September, Vice-Chairman of the Welsh Kennel Club, Alan Fall, highlighted various issues for the Welsh Assembly Animal Welfare Policy officials to consider, relating to the enforcement and subsequent funding of the proposed tough new regulation.

Mr Fall commented: “Whilst we recognise the obvious need to improve the reputation Wales has obtained in regards to puppy farming, the Assembly officials have made it quite clear that there is no funding available for new legislation. If it is to be at all successful, mechanisms must be put in place to ensure the responsible breeder is not stonewalled by excessive regulation. This may simply stop responsible breeders from producing litters altogether, further pushing people to puppy farmers who work outside of the law anyway.”

The meeting comes after the newly appointed Environment Minister, John Griffiths AM, outlined plans for officials to “have discussions with interested parties to identify their concerns and proposals and, where relevant, consider these in new draft legislation”.

The Kennel Club and Welsh Kennel Club applauded the Environment Minister's announcement in July of the Welsh Government’s intention to consult further on dog breeding regulations in Wales in order to ensure any new legislation “is not burdensome on those breeders who fully meet the welfare needs set out in the Animal Welfare Act”.

The revised legislative proposals, to be consulted on this autumn, will follow further focus group work. During this time, the Kennel Club and Welsh Kennel Club will continue working with the Welsh Assembly to offer their guidance and expertise on the breeding of dogs.

Welsh Kennel Club. Introductory Stake. At Trefeglwys. Powys. On: 13.6.10.
Judge Bill Richardson.
Steward Sarah Moore.
Trials Managers Report.

What wonderful weather we were blessed with for the first trial to be held in Mid Wales. Thanks go to  Bill Richardson for judging and Sarah Moore for her stewarding and putting everyone at their ease. Sadly the heavens opened as we neared the end of the trial with one competitor getting soaked but it dried up again for the stays.
The fields were superb and thanks must go to the land owner Les Gethin and family for their generosity, without them there would have been no trial and indeed a very difficult training week end with Moira Rogerson who primed many of the competitors.
There were 10 entries of which 8 qualified. I will leave Bill to write his own report.
1st: David Warrick  & Space Commander. X. 97marks. 6 weeks ago Dave underwent a quadruple heart bypass, so an achievement for them both.
2nd: Carol Royles Star At Concenn. Welsh Sheepdog. Handled by John Fitzpatrick. 92 marks.
3rd: ARO. Karen Cullen & Tramella Tipsi. GSD. 89 marks.
4th: Sylvia Cook & Mister Moss At Goldoak. WSD. 89 marks.
Also qualifying:
Andriette Larsson-Clifford & Tobias Blackbeard. X. 88 marks.
Kerry Wiggins & Edwardiana Ghost  . ESS. 83 1/2 marks.
Elinore Vickery & Kellcastle Chocolat Saphir At Firequest. BSD Terv. 82 marks.
Fernando Brown & Zeus Head. Dobermann. 81 1/2 marks.
Well done to the other two competitors Jude Hammersley & her X Showgirl Lola on 82 1/2 marks with only the scale between her and a qualification and Hazel Sharp and her X Amber Golden Gem - only lost one on the jumps and she only started training for them over the week end!
Hopefully all will be enthused enough to go forward to CD Championship and UD open.
GAIL GWESYN-PRYCE.
